Discover: The Pearson's Arms, Whitstable

Known as a live music hotspot and a welcoming pub, The Pearson’s restaurant elevates pub classics, focusing on locally-sourced produce

In arguably the most envious position of the town, The Pearson’s Arms straddles the High Street and the beachfront offering a great spot for cold drinks, great food and a bubbling atmosphere.

Now owned by Jake Alder, wife Chloe and their family, The Pearson’s is known as a live music hotspot, welcoming pub as well as an inviting restaurant that elevates pub classics, focusing on locally-sourced produce for its home-made honest cooking.

Jake, who has been in the industry since he was a teenager working his way up from glass collector to passionate cocktail maker, has a wealth of knowledge having worked in bars across Europe before taking over the Grove Ferry pub on the outskirts of Canterbury in the early 2000s, aged just 21.

In 2010, he and his family relocated to Whitstable and became joint owner and general manager of The Pearson’s Arms. With experienced chef Terry Amos in the kitchen, The Pearson’s is at the centre of the community, working with local suppliers on many ingredients - check out the Bangers & Mash, with Jim’s of Whitstable Butcher’s Sausages! It has also become renowned for its Sunday Roast!

“We are a family run pub,” says Jake. “We are also family-friendly, as kids under 10 eat for free. We are also dog-friendly in our bar and downstairs Snug restaurant.

“Live music plays a massive part in the pub, too, and we showcase lots of local talent. Our food is simple pub food done really well, using locally-sourced produce from local suppliers and we try to cater to everyone’s needs where possible.”

The Pearson’s has a great wine list and draught beers with some amazing local vineyards represented, while a beautiful list of cocktails are something of the jewel in the crown.
