Dover College: Where Art Meets Opportunity

EKC Dover College, an emerging force in arts education, is looking to appoint an Artist in Residence

In the coastal town of Dover, a creative transformation is under way.

EKC Dover College, an emerging force in arts education, is looking to appoint an Artist in Residence for the 2025 academic year – and it’s an opportunity unlike any other.

Artist-in-residence positions give artists what they often lack: support, structure and space to grow. They're not just about producing work, but about evolving as an artist – something that is, and always will be, championed at EKC Dover College

Set within the historic coastal town of Dover, EKC Dover College is inviting a practising artist to become part of its vibrant and forward-thinking Art and Design department.

Launching in September 2025, the college’s new artist-in-residence scheme offers a rare and exciting opportunity to develop your creative practice while making a lasting impact on the next generation of artists.

At EKC Dover College, creativity is not only encouraged – it’s celebrated. The department provides an inspiring, supportive environment where students are empowered to take risks, explore new media and develop their unique artistic voice.

Under a new initiative, the college is seeking an artist to join them on this journey – someone who brings passion to their own practice and enthusiasm for nurturing young talent.

“We’re looking for someone who’s not only passionate about their own work, but also about helping young artists thrive,” says EKC Dover College Principal Eleanor Sherratt.

“This role is about inspiring through example, engaging with students and becoming a valued part of a creative, collaborative community. This is a truly special opportunity, offering access to an environment full of potential.”

Open to artists from all disciplines – whether you’re a painter, sculptor, photographer, digital creator or multidisciplinary practitioner – the residency prioritises collaboration, openness and a desire to share and grow.

What makes this residency truly stand out is the professional development it offers. From a dedicated private studio space to a wealth of creative facilities, it provides the time, tools and space many emerging artists simply can’t afford early in their careers.

“For artists fresh out of university, establishing a sustainable practice can be daunting,” says Programme Director Jacob Weeks.

“This residency provides a real lifeline – not just studio space, but also access to a photographic darkroom, fully equipped lighting studio, printmaking press and an iMac suite with the full Adobe Creative Cloud.”

Residents will also benefit from a materials allowance and perhaps most exciting of all, the opportunity to exhibit their work at the college’s partner galleries. Jacob added: “It’s a rare chance to grow artistically and professionally in equal measure.

“This is far more than a studio-based role. The artist-in-residence will play an integral part in the life of the college, planning and delivering two student workshops per term, contributing to lessons and tutorials, and collaborating with staff and students alike.

“They will also help shape key events, including the college’s highly anticipated end-of-year exhibition.

“By sharing your journey and creative process, you’ll not only inspire students but also become part of a supportive space where learning goes both ways.

“This isn’t just about teaching. It’s about discovery, exchange and growing as part of a creative community.”

Why EKC Dover College?

Rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 2023, EKC Dover College – part of the East Kent Colleges Group – is fast becoming a recognised hub for emerging artists.

Its strong industry links, excellent facilities and commitment to real-world experience offer students an authentic insight into life as a working artist.

The college is also deeply connected to Dover’s evolving art scene. With key creative sites such as the Maison Dieu and the Dover Beacon project, the town itself offers a wealth of inspiration and opportunity.

Level 3 Art and Design student Nicola said: “I came here because the course looked fab.

“I've had a really good time here, and through this course, it opens a lot more afterwards – it's got connections to some really good universities and job opportunities.

“Being here also means that you're more connected with other people and we can all share our art.”
